Zircaloy scrap – Monico AlloysZircaloy scrap is a vital part of the reusable metal industry. Zircaloy is a group of high zirconium alloys. One of the main sources of Zircaloys is surplus or parts of nuclear technology components. Two prime sources Zircaloy scrap that Monico Alloys deals with include Zircaloy-2, which is 98.25 percent zirconium, 1.45 percent tin, .135 percent iron, .055 percent nickel and .01 percent hafnium; and Zircaloy-4, which consists of 98.23 percent zirconium, 1.45 percent tin, .21 percent iron, .1 percent chromium and .01 percent hafnium. Zircaloy scrap is recycled by Monico Alloys, one of only a few companies in the United States and Mexico that recycles these high-zirconium alloys. Zircaloy scrap is generated from scrap metal during metal production and/or fabrication of nuclear technology components. Since reactor-grade zirconium alloy (Zircaloy) components must be made of purified zirconium (and the resulting reactor-grade zirconium is roughly ten times as expensive as the commercial grade), the reclamation of Zircaloy scrap is an important process. Below is a list of Zircaloy scrap that Monico Alloys handles:
Today there is a global trade in the buying and selling of high temperature scrap alloys in which Monico Alloys plays an active part. The forecasts are that the volume for both buyers and sellers will continue to increase.
